Teddy Bear Clinic Success!

Anytime that there is a chance to teach children about their health, the doctors and nurses at Oklahoma ER & Hospital get excited. This excitement was the driving force behind our first annual Teddy Bear Clinic, which was held February 23rd. As the first event of its kind, this family-friendly clinic was met with just as much excitement from the community as our staff had in organizing it.

The Teddy Bear Clinic was set up for kids to come into Oklahoma ER & Hospital with their favorite stuffed animals, dolls, and toys and get them a “checkup.” These quick examinations allowed doctors and nurses to show kids how to take care of themselves, from bandaging boo-boos to eating their veggies. Edmond-area children who attended had the option to adopt new stuffed animals at the event as well.

Oklahoma ER & Hospital saw more than 200 participants at the Teddy Bear Clinic, who were all given an interactive tour of our facility. First, there was a hand washing station to show kids how important it is to keep their hands clean. Second, doctors had an informative triage station, where they checked all of their plushy patients in with a weigh-in, heart and ear check, and then a diagnosis of each toy’s condition. Third, our staff hosted the care station, where they showed children how to properly bandage their toys and let them participate in giveaways and face painting.

At our special coloring station, kids could enter their artwork to win a $50 Build-A-Bear gift card to take home. Our fifth station was for imaging and X-rays, where children got to learn from radiologists and lab technicians how important imaging is to modern medicine. Then, all participants were led to the stations for snacks and additional games. Local businesses, like Chick-Fil-A, Breakaway Indoor Playground, Okie Kids Playground, Main Event, iFly, Tot Town, ShowBiz Cinemas, and Teddy Bear Mobile, partnered with Oklahoma ER & Hospital to make event special.

February’s Teddy Bear Clinic was the first event of its kind at Oklahoma ER & Hospital, but it won’t be the last. After seeing so many families excited to be taking part, our staff is inspired to host more outreach efforts like this one. For anyone eager to take part in more Oklahoma ER & Hospital events, then we urge everyone to mark your calendars for April 13th, when the Easter Bunny will be visiting our facility to have breakfast our local families and host an egg hunt.
